Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you first get into mixology? Who/what/where taught you what you know?

My name is Rhonda and I am a busy full-time working mother. Originally hailing from Brisbane, Australia, I now reside in Melbourne.

Starting my career as a Registered Nurse (and continuing to work in the healthcare industry to this day), I never would have dreamed that I would end up pursuing my passion for Margaritas.

I started The Margarita Mum 4 years ago, quite simply because I love margaritas and wanted to share this. My personal Facebook page was overflowing with friends and family members posting Margarita recipes and memes, and I became affectionately known as ‘rhondarita’ and ‘margarhonda’. I created The Margarita Mum Facebook and Instagram pages just to showcase my Margarita journey. It wasn’t long before I began creating my own Margarita recipes, and eventually a wide variety of cocktails and mocktails using all sorts of spirits and aperitifs.

The Margarita Mum brings me so much joy and happiness, and I believe the possibilities are endless. What’s the saying about doing something you love and never working a day in your life? Well, this is something I work very hard at, and I just love it.

What are you excited about in the world of mixology right now?

Cocktail and drinks recipes are everywhere now, and there is so much information for home bar enthusiasts to create delicious drinks at home.  I have seen in increase in the popularity of well stocked bar trolleys at home as well as the re-emergence of home bars in interior design!

One of the other biggest emerging trends, is low and no alcohol ‘spirits’ including aperitifs, gin, dark spirits and vodka that are offering consumers alternatives to drinking alcohol. My mocktail creations are becoming increasingly popular and I am being regularly asked by followers of the margarita mum and brands to create mocktails!

Tell us about a recent experiment you’ve tried!

Quarantine and Isolation has given me a lot more time to experiment with spirit infusions. I am particularly proud of recent blue cheese martini creation!

I have also used this time to perfect sugar free cordials, syrups and sweet/sour mixes.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from so many places. I usually start with a market visit – I like to use fresh and seasonal produce wherever possible!

I draw inspiration from using what I have on hand and I love it when deliciousness comes from simplicity.

I am also inspired by the #drinkstagram community who are always coming up with fabulous new ideas!
