Technically, Daiquiri is the name for the family of cocktails that contain rum as the base spirit, then the addition of fruit juice and sweetener. When you hear daiquiri, you often think of the super-sweet frozen slushy drink enjoyed at tropical resorts during spring breaks. However, the classic daiquiri cocktail is credited to Jennings Cox, an iron miner in the early 1900s on the island of Daiquiri. The tale goes that he was entertaining guests one night, and suddenly realized that he did not have enough gin to serve everyone. He excused himself as he went to secure rum, which was the only liquor he could find, and added lime to cut the taste of rum. The Daiquiri was born. With its zesty energy from citrus fruits, and sweet profile captured by rum – this cocktail is a perfect when you’re in the mood for some homemade sunshine.
