A popular cocktail during prohibition, the Last Word is a gin and Green Chartreuse cocktail that dipped in popularity until it suddenly re-emerging as a favorite, inspiring several different versions of itself. The resurgence in popularity is credited to Seattle bartender Murray Stenson while he was working at the Zig Zag Café where it gained a cult following. With equal parts gin, Green Chartreuse, lime juice, and maraschino liqueur, the Last Word is a surprisingly versatile drink with interchangeable spirits to create new forms– for one, substituting mescal for gin or using citric acid in place of lime juice.
