The Manhattan is one of the six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury’s 1948 classic cocktail book The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks. With its distinguishing reddish-orange amber hue, the Manhattan cocktail is easy to recognize immediately. This classic has stood the test of time, from the 19th century to modern day, and unlike most drinks, the recipe for the Manhattan remains more or less the same. It has survived brutal wars, economic recessions, and the Prohibition era. With its combination of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and thoughtfully selected bitters, enjoying a Manhattan takes you into the past and helps you appreciate what a traditional whiskey cocktail tastes like!
