The credit for the invention of the classic Old Pal cocktail goes to Harry MacElhone, the owner of Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, where he combined rye whiskey, dry vermouth, and Campari to create the Old Pal. The drink is often considered to be a milder version of the sister cocktail, the Boulevardier, which was also one of Harry’s creations. It is believed that the drink first appeared in the 1922 edition of one of Harry’s two cocktail books Harry’s ABC of Mixing Cocktails and hasn’t left the hearts of liquor lovers since then.
