The Vesper first appeared in Ian Fleming’s 1953 James Bond novel Casino Royale, named for double agent Vesper Lynd. The chapter itself outlines how the cocktail is made, which specifies shaking the drink until it is ice cold. However, rule of thumb is that spirit forward drinks get stirred, not shaken, to avoid dilution. Therefore, we recommend that ir’s stirred to allow it to chill and radiate its flavors without dilution. A classic vesper uses gin, vodka, and Lillet Blanc with a lemon peel for garnish – Fleming’s recipe. However, bartenders have since taken it upon themselves to come up with variations for this drink, including one where Cocchi Americano takes the place of Lillet for a new spin on the classic.
