The White Russian burst onto the scene in 1949 at the Hotel Metropole, when Gustave Tops, a Brussels based barman decided it would be a fine idea to add cream to the Black Russian cocktail. The drink is made from vodka, coffee liqueur, and fresh cream, though milk may be substituted in place of this. The drink exploded in popularity at bars in the U.S. after being the favorite of Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski in the 1998 cult film The Big Lebowski, which he famously drank after stirring the cocktail with his pinky.
